The useful part for a surf angler is the specification: wood species, buoyancy, lip angle, wire gauge and hook placement. Read those pages the way you read a plug in the hand, and the maker’s choices explain how the lure will behave in a bar or a rip.

Reading both together is a form of preparation, much as pre-departure checks treat a route as something to be verified before it is ridden. The maker’s page states what the lure is; the water states what it does.
What a maker’s site tells you that a tackle shop cannot
A shop shows you a finished plug under fluorescent light. A maker’s own pages show the sequence: which blank is turned from which board, how much lead goes into the belly, where the through-wire exits, and what finish goes over the sealer. That sequence is the difference between two plugs of identical length that fish nothing alike. Wooden surf plugs divide broadly into floating and sinking families, and the maker’s density notes usually say which is which. A popper turned from a light, buoyant blank sits high and cups water when you work it; the same shape in a denser wood sits lower and pushes less spray. Neither is better. They answer different water.
Which wooden lure families suit which water?
Poppers and pencils are surface tools. A popper with a cupped face throws spray and calls fish up; a pencil, with no cup, walks side to side and leaves a quieter wake. Both want relatively calm surface conditions, or a light chop that hides the lure’s body without breaking its action. Metal-lipped swimmers and darters are the current tools. A swimmer with a metal lip digs and wobbles on a steady retrieve; a darter, with its flat face and angled slope, darts and pauses when the water pushes it. Both are usually fished where there is moving water: a bar edge, a trough, a rip line. Needlefish and bottle plugs sit between the two groups. A needlefish is long, slim and often slow-sinking, and it is usually worked with a steady retrieve or a subtle twitch. A bottle plug carries a rounded head that lets it hold in a hard sweep without tumbling. A maker’s site will normally state which of these are through-wired and which are screw-eye construction, and that single detail decides how much drag the plug will take.
How do you read the water before choosing a plug?
Start with the bottom, not the plug. Bars, troughs and holes decide where bait sits, and bait decides where fish sit. A bar that dries at low water and floods at high is a feeding shelf; the trough behind it is where fish wait for whatever the current delivers. Breakers and white water are a separate case. Foam holds oxygen and disorients bait, and fish use it as cover. A surface lure that stays on top through the wash, or a swimmer that holds its line in the foam, is the usual answer. In a rip, where two currents meet and the surface shows a seam, a darter or a needlefish fished across the seam often draws a strike on the pause rather than on the retrieve. At night the rules shift. Silhouette matters more than colour, and a slow, steady retrieve with long pauses usually beats a fast one. A maker’s notes on sinking rate become more useful than any finish description, because at night you are fishing depth and speed, not paint.
What does a maker’s build sheet actually specify?
Wood species and density come first. Lighter blanks float higher and work better as surface lures; denser blanks sink and suit sub-surface work. Some makers list the actual species, others list only a density class. Either way, the number tells you how the plug will sit at rest. Weighting is next. Belly lead, tail lead or a combination changes the plug’s attitude in the water. A tail-weighted needlefish casts further and sinks nose-up; a belly-weighted swimmer rolls more on the retrieve. The build sheet usually states the position, sometimes the mass. Wiring follows. A through-wire runs the length of the plug and takes the load of the fight; screw eyes are simpler and lighter but limit drag. For surf fishing, where a fish may be fought through wash and structure, the through-wire is the more conservative choice, and most makers say so plainly. Sealing and finish come last in the description but first in durability. A plug that takes on water fishes heavier after twenty casts and never returns to its original action. Sealer type, number of coats and topcoat are worth reading before you judge a price.
How do you tune a metal lip and choose hooks?
Lip angle sets the depth and the width of the wobble. Bend the lip down and the plug digs deeper and rolls harder; bend it up and the plug runs shallower and tighter. Make small changes, test in shallow water beside you, and note what you did. A lip that has been bent back and forth repeatedly will fatigue and eventually crack, so tune once and leave it. Hook choice follows the plug’s role. A surface plug usually wants a lighter hook that will not sink the nose; a sub-surface plug in current can carry a heavier gauge. Replace split rings with a rating that matches the wire, and check every ring after a fish. On a wooden plug, the hardware is the weak point far more often than the wood. Maintenance is simple and mostly about water. Rinse after every session, dry before storage, and inspect the finish around the wire exit and the hook hangers, where cracks start. A plug that has been repaired with sealer and left to cure will usually fish again; one that has been left wet in a bag will not.
Matching species and season to a plug choice
Species and season decide size more than shape does. In spring and autumn, when bait is small and scattered, slim profiles and smaller surface lures tend to draw more interest. In summer, when bait schools are dense, a larger swimmer or a bottle plug that can be cast into a sweep and held there is often the more practical tool. Night fishing rewards a different set of choices again: dark, slow, and often larger than you would use in daylight, because the fish are tracking a silhouette rather than inspecting a finish. A maker’s own notes on which of their plugs are built for current, and which for calm surface, are the shortest route to a sensible starting selection. None of this replaces time on the beach. It shortens the list of variables, which is all a reference can do. Read the build sheet, read the water, then throw the plug and watch what it does.
